My son loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar like most children do. We have a few other Eric Carle books that we enjoy also. I thought while he was out of preschool for the summer we would do some crafts with some of his favorite books to help keep him occupied and hope to have fun while doing them.
This is what we came up with for The Very Hungry Caterpillar book:
coloring sheet -http://www.coloring.ws/t_template.asp?t=http://www.coloring.ws/fruit/2.gif
pom pom clothes pin-http://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/insects/mcaterpillar2.htm
cut out pc- http://www.dltk-kids.com/t_template.asp?t=http://www.dltk-teach.com/books/hungrycaterpillar/csequencing.gif
use on felt board or as puppets?http://www.dltk-teach.com/books/hungrycaterpillar/felt_fun.htm
Update: I saw a great snack to go with this book on a blog I love. Here is the link http://www.meetthedubiens.com/2012/05/very-hungry-caterpillar-fruit-snack.html. Hope to try it out one day!
My son is 3yr so short and simple crafts are good. We do them and then on to the next thing!!! There are a lot of other very cute and fun to do crafts out there but these work best for us at this time. My son did not want to have his picture taken or have me read to him today. And that is ok, I do not plan crafts and activities for him to be unhappy but for him to have fun and learn a little sometimes. He did help me with the pom pom caterpillars and he read the book to himself while looking at his cut out pieces. I thought it was quite cute to watch him while he read and looked through them. Most moms do love to watch their children as they find themselves:-)
Our pom pom caterpillars:
What you need: pom pom's( I call them puff balls), clothes pin, glue, googly eyes.
What to do:
I used the hot glue gun to glue on the eyes. Then I let my son glue the puff balls on the clothes pin. Simple and very cute.
So simple but I just love these caterpillars.
Our cut outs:
There are 2 links above with cut outs. One set is smaller than the other. The larger set you can use on a felt board or make puppets by adding popsicle sticks. We just left ours plain old cut outs. The smaller ones I want to go back and print one more time so he can make the piece up. You can do lots of learning activities with both sets of pieces ie.) counting, going over colors and shapes. Also let them set the pieces up in order that the book went......
What you need:
go to above link and print out the templates, scissors(I used scrap booking scissors to give them a designed edge).
What I did:
I glued my templates to card stock paper and then cut out. Again, easy and simple work best for us!!
So now we have a few extra things to get out at times when we read our loved book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

Please do come and visit us again. We would love to have you back.
All kids are different and only you can decide how you let your kids play. And with what materials you let them play with. My children are supervised when playing. Please keep this in mind with any post you read of mine!

My girls love the Hungry caterpillar This looks like great fun !
ReplyDeleteOh those pom pom caterpillars are the cutest. I made a hungry caterpillar glove puppet and that went down well too. Kids just love that book.
