If you follow FSPDT activities and crafts then you know I have been on an apple kick. Once I decided to plan some apple fun with the kids, the ideas just kept coming. Today I am sharing a classic science experiment with a twist. Apple Volcanoes are easy to set up and a ton of fun for the entire family!
What you need:
apples that you are not going to eat
red and green food coloring
apple scented dish soap (wash up soap)
baking soda
vinegar
I had my husband cut out holes in several apples for me. Thanks my love!
I mixed up apple soap (about a tablespoon or maybe more) and vinegar. Then added food coloring.
I got a tray out and added the apples filled with baking soda. I tried to add more and less to some of the apples so we could see if there was any difference in the reaction.
Now it was time to test our experiment out!
By adding the soap we got real foamy volcanoes. The kids loved it. It was a little different from our other baking soda experiments.
Big brother 5.5yr and little brother 3yr were given this experiment to try out. Baby brother 1.5yr was really wanting to get his hands on this experiment.
The older boys filled the apples over and over and kept getting foamy and fizzy reactions. They were enjoying themselves.
Once little brother sat his measuring cup down baby brother did not miss a beat. He grabbed it and dumped the entire measuring cup out and cheered with delight.
Watching him sneak in and take that cup and then take his turn was my favorite part of the experiment. That sweet smile says it all, "mommy I am a big boy now".
Now it was a sensory play invitation for play. They all got their hands in the foam and fizzing stuff and investigated further.
