Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dog Tail (FSPDT): Sunflower Scented Rice Invitation to Play

Sunflower Scented Rice Invitation to Play

We made Sunflower Playdough in the spring and I had hoped to set up a few more activities for the kids with the same scent.  Time got away from me and we never got around to it.  However, this day was the day to make it happen.  I made them some Sunflower Scented Rice and set them up an invitation to play.

What I used:

Sunflower Fragrance oil

yellow food coloring

dry white rice

How to make:

Take the dry rice and add to bowl.  Take a small amount of water and mix in a few drops of the yellow food coloring.  Pour over the rice and mix well with a spoon.  Have a tray lined with paper towel ready to pour the wet rice onto.  Spread out on the tray and let air dry.

I set the kids up with a tray filled with stones, sunflower seeds, little wooden blocks? I found in the house, and wooden bowls.

Now all we needed was a sunny spot to play.  I put a sheet down for them on the deck and let them take over.

Open ended  play for the kids.  You give them the items and they play with them how they want.

They poured, scooped, mixed, sprinkled, and scattered the rice.

The rice smelled amazing!  I just love the scent of sunflowers.

When they got through playing we added some of the items to clear plastic bottles.  Now they had sensory bottles or shakers.

We hope you can have fun with this idea too.

All kids are different and only you can decide how you let your kids play. And with what materials you let them play with. My children are supervised when playing.
