Pink Snail Craft in Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Having been in the medical field and watching close friends and co-workers deal with this in their families it hits home with me.  My close family has been affected by many types of other cancers(CA) but not breast.  I support the awareness of all cancers but for this month I wanted to share on breast cancer.

October has been set up as a month to spread the word on breast CA.  One important area is screening and I would like to share that with you.  Woman age 40yr should have yearly mammograms.  Women in their 20's & 30's should have a breast exam done by a doctor every 3yrs and women in their 40's every year.  Women can also perform self breast exams and know what is and isn't normal for their breasts.  If you ever have a question please see a doctor. American Cancer Society is a great resource for information.

In honor of this month, I wanted to do a pink craft with my boys.  Yes, they are young and may not grasp the concept of cancer however I do not think they are too young to start learning to care for a cause and others.  I told my boys that women get sick sometimes and this month is a month we can support them by making a pink craft and sharing it with others. I kept it really simple.  Then we moved on to our craft. We have done this craft before but this time we just did it all pink.

What you need:  paper plate, pink paper, glue, googly eyes, pink pipe cleaner.  Scissors for older kids.

What to do:  I took the pink paper and cut the body of the snail out for the boys.  For my preschooler he started cutting up his pieces of paper.  My toddler tore his pieces of paper up.  Both great motor skill builders for them.  When they had their paper into small pieces we then applied glue to the plate.  My preschooler can do this on his own but I helped my toddler.  We then added the paper pieces to the glue on the plate.  We then glued the body of the snail on to the plate.  Last we glued on the eye and pipe cleaner as an antenna.

We have also made pink peppermint playdough to sell at a church sale.  The money we make will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society has a  page packed full of information on breast cancer and ways you can get involved and donate. If it is something you would be interested in please take a look.  My hope with this post is to help spread the word on  breast screenings.  Also show our support to the survivors of breast CA and the ones currently affected  by breast cancer ( you all amaze me).   We also would like to honor those that have gone before us and let them know they are not forgotten.

We linked up at tue tots.

Please do come and visit us again. We would love to have you back.

All kids are different and only you can decide how you let your kids play. And with what materials you let them play with. My children are supervised when playing. Please keep this in mind with any post you read of mine!
