When my oldest was about 1.5 years old I set out to make him edible playdough. I googled how to make it and wrote down the directions. I whipped him up a batch and we had a good time playing in it. I saved the directions but we have yet to make it again for his younger brothers. My oldest is 5 yr now. He has asked me a few times over the years to make the playdough you can eat. I usually put him off because frosting was one of the ingredients and I did not have a can on hand to use. During the Christmas holidays we made a few treats that used frosting. We did not use very much on our cookies so we had almost a whole can left. This was the perfect time to surprise my boys with Edible Peanut Butter Playdough.
Edible Peanut Butter Playdough
What we used:
1 can of frosting
1.5 cups powder sugar
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup flour
What we did:
I added all the ingredients to a bowl and mixed until I could mold it. Last, I sat it out for my oldest to play with. He got the surprise first since I made this during nap time for the younger 2.
If you want to store this playdough keep it in a plastic container in the fridge.
Our Setup:
I gathered up some of the kids play dishes from B Toys and set the playdough up with them. We had bowls, spoons, knives, plates...
This playdough is loaded with sugar so I did not encourage my kids to just eat as much as they wanted. I cautioned my oldest that it was fun to taste and that is what makes edible playdough so much fun. However, eating too much might give him a tummy ache. He tasted a small amount and said it was really good and then played without eating anymore.
Playdough is a great sensory material. This edible playdough was perfect for sight, touch, smell, and taste. Playdough is also great for fine motor skills practice. Just mashing it up in your hand helps work on all those little hand muscles.
My son made me a few yummy pretend dishes to sample while he played. We often get to spend time together while the other 2 kids nap. I played a little and then went to wash dishes while he made the next creation. Multitasking is my life.
He made bread and cut it up. This is a great life lesson for cutting bread and using a knife. I hope when he heads off, to college or moves out someday, he will be able to cook for himself or at least make a PBJ, lol.
I love that the tray held most of the mess. It mad for an easier clean up for myself. My 2 yr got to play with it later that day. I only gave him a small portion of the playdough with the same set up. He has a big sweet tooth so I did not want him eating the entire batch of edible playdough. I do wish I had taken his picture right as I told him the playdough was ok to eat! He had never been told that. It was quite the opposite of what I have been telling him his whole life. He processed that info and then quickly put some of the playdough in his mouth. Ummm, he said. I love that even baby brother got to get in on this activity. I gave him a few dishes and a very small amount of this playdough on his high chair tray. I just loved watching him as he explored playdough for his first time. This was the perfect multiple aged activity for my kids.
As always I hope you and the kids can enjoy this play recipe and activity too.
