This week is all about Gross Motor Skills for the Spring Activities for Kids series brought to you by Learn Play Imagine and us, FSPDT.
We got stuck inside during an ice storm and what better way to keep the kids busy than with a fun butterfly number and color walk. This was a great sanity saver for us this day. The kids just loved it.
Butterfly Color and Number Walk- gross motor skills
What we used:
Colored cardstock
sharpies
painters tape
I drew butterflies on each piece of paper. I added numbers 1-6 to each one. I also gave each butterfly the same number of dots so the kids could count them.
I then took the 6 butterflies and taped them to the floor with painters tape. I made a circle with them for us to have a color walk!
They walked on the butterflies until I said stop. Whatever butterfly they stopped on they had to tell me the color and number. It was easier for my tot to tell me the colors but my preschooler was able to go over both numbers and colors. Even though my tot may not have known the numbers, this was great way for them to practice and learn at home.
The color number walk turned into a color sort at the kids prompting. After we went through all the colors and numbers, the kids went over to a box of toys in the floor and started matching them up.
| yep, we have dirt on our floors:) |
The color sort was a big hit. As you can see below little brother was just thrilled that he got them all right!
This color and number walk is not just great for learning to count and recognize colors, it is also great to get the kids moving! Perfect for those gross motor skills. You can also add jumping on the butterflies to increase movement and burn a little more energy off.

All kids are different and only you can decide how you let your kids play. And with what materials you let them play with. My children are supervised when playing. Please keep this in mind with any post you read of mine!

This is a great idea! My daughter is just beginning to work on numbers and she loves doing active things, so we may have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing.
