Chicka Chicka Boom Boom- Letter Learning Activity for Kids

We finally got our own copy of Chicka Chicka Boom Boom last fall.  I had heard it was a big hit with kids and a great way to learn letters.  I was not sure if we would like it or not, but I looked forward to reading it with the kids.  We sat down one night and started to read the book.  The kids really enjoyed the fun story of all the letters climbing a tree.  I admit I liked it too.  After reading the book 5 times in a row for that one sitting I would say it was a keeper.  

This week's Preschool Book Club is  for the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. I could not wait to set the kids up with a book inspired activity.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom- Letter Learning Activity for Kids

It did not take me long to come up with an activity to go with this book. You can buy the book here Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (Chicka Chicka Book, A)   The thought of coconut playdough came right to mind.  It would be the perfect way to explore our letters outside the book. 

How to make coconut playdough:  follow my white playdough recipe   leave out the glitter and add brown food coloring and coconut extract to the batch.  For the second batch just use green food coloring and coconut extract.

That is how we got green and brown (at my son's request) coconut playdough.

What we did:

I sat the playdough out on round cookie sheets.  I then gave both the kids their own cookie sheet with playdough and magnetic letters.

The brown and green colors my son requested worked out great to make  a tree with.  I was going to make it white but the colors were perfect.  He made a good call.

My toddler asked for help making a tree but my preschooler started out with his own vision and made it happen.

I love how he created a standing tree just like the book.  The one I helped my tot make was flat.

As we read the book the kids looked for the matching magnetic letters.  I love how my son wanted all the letters to climb the tree!

This is a great activity for letter recognition.  Playdough is great for fine motor skills.  The bright colored letters give you a chance to go over colors too.  This is also a fun way to work on new words with the kids.  Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is now a common phrase in my house, lol.  


Once we made it through the entire alphabet, my son knocked the letters down.  We then worked on finding the right letters to place them back in our bowl.  After we did this I let the kids have free play with the playdough and letters.  A few trucks came out and they had evwn more fun playing.
