I had a great post written to introduce this new mini series Sensory Sink Play with Little Bins for Little Hands. I sat down to schedule it and it was gone!! Luckily I had all the photos still on my hard drive. Now I sit down to try and make it just as good.
My Nearest and Dearest teamed up for Sensory Sink Sundays in 2013. It was so much fun. When Sarah mentioned teaming up for a mini sink series I was all in! The link above shares a little on sensory sinks and gives links to past sensory sink play. For this new Sensory Sink Play series, Little Bins for Little Hands and FSPDT will bring you 3 fun days of inspiration for sink play. Today we kick off with Superhero Sensory Sink. Perfect theme for my superhero loving family.
Sensory sinks are easy to set up and surprisingly not very messy. Put a towel down on the floor and clean up is pretty easy. My kids have just as much fun rinsing out the sink as they do playing. Sensory sinks are great for exploring sight, touch, sound, possibly scent and taste. This depends on what is used as a filler in the sink.
What we used:
white construction paper
sharpies
superheros
black pillowcase
sprinkles
soap foam
How to make soap foam:
Take dish soap and add it to a bowl of water. Take hand mixer and mix together until foam appears. I added neon green food coloring after to get green monster foam.
I just kept adding the food coloring until it was the color green I wanted. This soap foam was the perfect sink safe sensory filler for playtime.
How to set up Superhero Sink:
Start with a black pillowcase or paper, whatever you have on hand. We had a pillowcase so that is what I used. I then created the city by cutting white construction paper into rectangles. Then I drew "windows" with yellow sharpies on them. I taped the pillowcase and "city buildings" up on the mirror.
I came up with a fun story line for our sink play. I have been watching way too many superhero movies. The soap foam monster was set free by the crazy Joker. The monster has started covering the city in foam! No one can save the city except the superheros we love.
The superheros that came to help today: Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine, and Spider-man. The soap foam monster and Joker do not stand a chance.
I left the bowl of soap foam in the sink for playtime. Big brother 5yr was so excited when he walked into the bathroom. He could not wait to start playing.
I explained the scene to him and he went to work aiding the superheros in capturing the soap monster. He has fun "sprinkle bombs" to throw at the monster and his foam.
I love all the colors of the sprinkles in the foam. This is a good time to go over colors. The foam is a fun texture to explore.
After playing in the foam for a while he turned on the water faucet.
Be ready to be put under a cup monster!
He continued to scoop and pour water and play with his superhero characters for a long time. I had to pull him away. We dumped the bowl over after the water had been on for a few minutes. Then he had the sink to play in.
