Second day of Sink Play series with Little Bin and Little Hands. Today is science theme sensory sink play.  I have wanted to make volcanoes with the kids for sometime now.  When brainstorming for what we would do for our science sink volcanoes came to mind.  It would be fun and contain the mess!  I could not wait to set up the Volcano Science Sensory Sink for the kids.

What we used:

baking soda

orange jello

vinegar

plastic dinosaurs

little plastic cups

a mixing bowl

How to set up:

I took roll paper and taped it to the mirror.  I then drew a volcano on it.  Do not laugh too hard
I am not artist.  But the kids knew what it was.

I set out some of our plastic toy dinosaurs around the sink.  I mixed 1 box of baking soda and 1 box of orange jello together in a bowl. A light mix of the two.

I then scooped the mix up in the little white plastic cups.  I sat them on the side of the sink.  I loved the smell of the orange jello.  This is a fun sink to explore smell.  The jello, the baking soda, and then soon the vinegar.

Both my 3yr and 5yr played in this sink.  Simple science is fun for both of them.

I gave both of them containers filled with vinegar.  They could not wait to start pouring in the powdered mixture in the cups.

Once the kids poured the vinegar into the cups and saw the fizzing reaction they could not get enough!  They poured more and more until it did not fizzy anymore.

They have played with baking soda and vinegar before but for some reason these little volcanoes were more exciting.

After the fizzing stopped, they poured the cup out in the sink and then we filled them again.  We had more powder mixture left over to add to the cups again.

After they poured the used mix in the sink and started adding more vinegar the sink started to fizz!

Even though the sink looks yucky this cleaned up easy.  No stains.  Baking soda is sink safe.  It is used as a cleaner.

Once finished, they turned the water on to clean up.

I wished they always enjoyed clean up this much after playing.

After they played in the water and rinsed everything off, we were off to the next adventure in our day.
